Editor

Dr Bains has specialized for decades in taking scientist/engineer-written content and making it accessible for a broader audience. Within her company she developed teaching materials to help editors understand how to do this and – through her company – has trained many editors over the years.

In terms of her own work as an editor, she has worked on more many of different publications in the past, from magazines (such as Holographics International and Laser Focus Word) and newsletters (including Robotics and Machine Perception and Electronic Imaging) to news services such as SPIE Newsroom and ENGins. You can see the full list by going to her Editing Archives.

Dr. Bains has also consulted for a number of public-interest and governmental organizations, including: the European Commission’s programme on Future and Emerging Technologies (2002/2003), EPSRC (The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council) and the UK Research Councils’ Basic Technology Programme (2002/3), the Institute of Biomedical Engineering at Imperial College London (2004). Most recently, she helped moderate discussion and write a report on the 2024 Workshop on Neuromorphic Principles in Biomedicine and Healthcare for the National Institute for Health (NIH) in collaboration with the National Science Foundation (NSF).

These days, Dr Bains only works on projects that particularly interest her, particularly within the neuromorphic engineering community. At the moment she runs the website for NeuroPAC: Accelerating Research on Neuromorphic Perception, Action, and Cognition and its monthly bulletin.
